The Mayans, unlike other cultures, didn’t worship any god of the wind. But the figure of Hurricane, one of the thirteen creator gods who helped build humanity during the third attempt, is associated with this element. Also Itzamná, the God of heaven and wisdom, founder of the Mayan culture, patron and protector of the sciences, astrology and writing. The wind, like all the forces of nature, is ambivalent: while it destroys, it cleanses, it is cathartic, it is the one that brings the rains and gives breath to living beings.
